The Great St Mary's new bells project - photos and news articles
***NEW***Install Week 2 photos ***NEW***
The Project Albums starts with some individual pictures of the band that rang for the 800th celebrations and then afterwards in Michaelhouse with members of bands from St Benets, St Edwards and St Andrew the Great who all rang at the same time. The last ring on the old bells was on Easter Monday 2009
At the foundry
There was a trip to Taylors in Loughborough who are the bell founders where we watched the casting of the bells. A video was taken of the Pouring the molten from the furnace and casting of the 6th. Also there are images of an earlier visit of casting of the trebles. At the Foundry , here are some images of the new frame being built in the foundry and images of the tuned bells
The removal of the old bells and frame Takeout Week1 and Takeout Week2 showing the work in the tower to dismantle things and 3 visits by a crane to remove bells and frame via a trap door in the roof.
This was then followed by the builders who are working in the belfry and ringing chamber (week Builder Week 1 and Builder Week 2) to ready things for the new frame and bells and also the return of the clock bells and 3 other historic bells we are keeping.
Install Week 1 - The installation began with the delivery of the frame and three old bells and then the new front bells and old tenor
Install Week 2 - The installation continued with the delivery of the remaining new bells (but for some strange reason not the other clock bells)
Ringing on the new bells
Video recordings of ringing on the new bells may be found here and here.
The GSM bells project was on BBC news on April 16th 2009 and in the Ely and Cambridge City newspapers.
